This was the 2nd best movie of the year (right behind Ratatouille), for all the reasons listed in this piece and more. I saw it 6 times in the theaters and have watched it 3 times since Tuesday. This film represents Disney Animation's return to Walt's vision after an uneven past few years. (Treasure Planet is still an undiscovered treasure. Watch it again and see.)

I agree, as well.

I missed this in the theater, but decided it was worth it to pick it up. I was ecstatic to find in the "bonus features" clips from many Walt era shorts and specials. It made me want to watch it again. So I did, and I enjoyed it even more.

Hopefully this will reawaken Disney.

By the sounds of things, I would agree that it was undone by the advertizing... What I saw in commercials was yet another post-Pixar, post-Shrek CGI wackyfest, which is why I didn't see it in theatres. But with all the rave reviews coming down the pipe, I may have to put this on the list.

Fantastic post. I completely agree that this film did not receive the attention of the Disney Marketing team, that it deserved... Especially since it was in 3D!

Who knows, maybe this film will become a classic in 50 years, like many other past Disney films.

I just re-read my comment and realized that I didn't state that I did enjoy the movie when my wife and I saw it at the theatre. We did get to see it in 3-D.

The final Disney quote was a clincher for me.

I loved the film in the theater and was disapointed to know that it was in 3-D right up the road.

My boys really loved it and to me, that speaks volumes. They were more excited that the lead character was a blond--there aren't many hero characters with blond hair (Aquaman, anybody?). It was great to see a character with smarts that wanted to excel in school.

Seeing the opening Castle shot gave me goosebumps and it felt like it was heralding a new generation of Disney films.

Wonderful post Jeff! I enjoyed the film in the theater and since on DVD. It is the quirkiness of the Robinsons that make the film so wonderful. I also appreciated the nob to Uncle Walt at the end. And, for the record, I enjoyed Treasure Planet too.

This post is another great example of those kinds of details and messages that seem to be ignored by me.

I think I could watch Meet the Robinsons many times and not picked up on any of those details even if I was looking for them.

Subtlety and nuances of story seem to be lost on me. It's why I need the help of things like Disney Scene Investigations to figure out what in the heck is really going on beyond the obvious.

This may play into my lack of desire to watch a movie more than once.....

I agree with you as well. My wife and I saw this when it came out (in wonderful 3-D too!) and we were amazed at how much we liked it. We felt it wasn't marketed very well when it came out. That it made it look like a silly fluff of a movie. But we were both really touched by what it had to say. And again, the quote at the end really hitting it home. And hey, the soundtrack has They Might Be Giants singing "It's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow," what's not to love!

Wonderful post Jeff! I couldn't agree more. I bought the DVD on Tuesday and played it at work during breaks. I had a group of co-workers get hooked on it over two days of viewing. At first, they dismissed it as being far too silly and eccentric (especially at the part where Lewis meets the entire Robinson family). But as we continued to watch, I was amazed at how everyone got wrapped into the film and by the end they all told me how much they liked it.

Yes, the film has its quirky moments, but at its core it is a beautiful story with lots of heart. I just wish it had gotten the recognition it deserved.
